Try to ensure that a minimum length of piping is maintained between the thermostat and any opening to the tub. Take off the joint on the outlet/inlet of the thermostat. Glue one side of the joint to the pipe tightly first, then hand tighten the other side to the outlet/inlet of the thermostat.
